Guide to Completed SSHG Epics (OotP-era)

For renitaleandra

I searched through FanfictionNet, AdultFanfiction, Restricted Section, Ashwinder, Petulant Poetess, OWL, Fiction Alley, Obscurus Books.

Below is listed every single completed SSHG story I could find of over 100,001+ words posted after June 21, 2003 and before July 15, 2005. I don’t mean to exclude any author or story, so if you know of a completed epic SSHG that started posting during the OotP era not listed here, let me know.

I also created guides to other lengths:

SSHG OotP Novels - Complete Guide - bet. 40,000 and 100,000 words
SSHG OotP Novellas - Complete Guide - bet. 10,000 and 40,000 words
SSHG OotP Shorts - Select Guide - under 10,000 words
SSHG OotP Drabbles- Select Guide
SSHG OotP WIPs - Select Guide

I put a star next to the ones I personally liked (I tried all below) and otherwise noted those recognized by awards and rec sites like the Multifaceteds, Quill to Parchment (QtP), Know It Alls (KIA) and crack_broom, as well as the sshg_awards to highlight those that you might find worthwhile checking out.

There are, of course, some works in progress that may yet reach epic length and be completed that ultimately will belong on this list. So, in the order in which they were posted:

Note: MLC

I was struggling with writer’s block. So guess what I did and have to share with you? Since I’m closing in on a couple of writing projects, I’m afraid you can’t expect a listing of the novels any time soon. But the Survey of Doom is back—only for OotP SSHG.

I have to say, if the epics are typical of the era, this was a much stronger time for the ship than the turbulent HBP period. There are several stories above that are favorites and even one, still posting in the HBP period (snarkyroxy's Before the Dawn) that was one of the stories that made SSHG my OTP (one true pairing). If you like Snarkyroxy, I think you’ll like melisande88’s Snape in Day Job, too—both are in a similar, rather heroic, sexy mold that has been accused of being “fanon Snape.”

Melisande is also one, along with Areola, who greatly impresses for the power of her prose, and you can see that in the collaboration, Needfire and Areola's Breeding Lilacs out of Dead Land. Both works are controversial within the ship, both are gorgeously written but harrowing. Actually, several of the above were controversial when they posted. Stories like Needfire, Breeding Lilacs, Tyger, Chaos took on difficult themes in ways I can’t recall seeing in later eras (or arguably earlier). These are thoughtful fics.

Lenya’s The Twenty is one people tend to love or hate. The Hermione is arguably OOC, the Snape not as prominently featured as in other fics this length, and it took me a bit to get into. What makes the story for me is not only the original magic but the relationship among the girls of Hogwarts and particularly the Pansy. Somewhere I Have Never Travelled otoh, hits the spot with me with the characters and I love how it turns the time-turner trope on its head. This was one story I hadn’t caught up with until I prepared this post. Another story with winning characterizations I couldn’t stop reading is Hayseed’s mystery Dark Gods of the Blood, with its wonderful Ron—yes, Ron.

And then there is the “Marriage Law” (MLC). That challenge was issued in WIKTT during this era, when Snape was still plausibly a pureblood. Back when it was a challenge, not a cliché, and you didn’t have to twist Snape and the wizarding world too much into a pretzel to write one. I never found this premise remotely plausible or attractive, but even I number Bloodcult’s Tyger! Tyger! among my favorite fics. For its twists and turns of plot, for its examination of a dark Snape—and for the surprisingly large amounts of humor within it. Generally, the only MLC I find readable are short and either dark or spoofs. Tyger is one of the rare exceptions. Chaos Is Come Again is dark—and not short. Chaos is one of the very, very few works in the ship that takes a realistic view of MLC. The things is does with the MLC are brilliant. This is a true dystopia, the Handmaid’s Tale of SSHG. The Snape is reminiscent of the one in Deeble’s What E'er Therin Is Promised. Don’t expect romance. For those who want their MLC romantic, on the other hand, Cloak of Courage is the uber MLC—and WendyNat is an excellent storyteller.

Thanks for this trip down memory lane! Wow, such stunning stuff in that era, I feel, looking back. So many of those fics were formative for me -- Cloak of Courage, Tyger! Tyger!, Objects of Desire...some of the earliest fics I read and reveled in. I loved the MLC for the schismatic and charismatic fics it spawned, and frankly, the er0tica as well. I could have done without some of the wank and in-fighting, but all the same, it triggered such a volume of stories to read, and revealed some wonderful writers to me.

Hope the writer's block is busted! If not, just sit down and start typing, and eventually it will move. I swear.

I got in right at HBP, so many of the above were already considered classics that were pointed to me as must reads--so they helped form my vision of the ship too (along with several shorter works in the era by you, Bambu, Blood--and a lot of the "Classic Era" writers--KazVL, Abby, Anne, Texutal Sphinx) So I get that--that rush just from looking at a list like this.

I might not hate MLC so much if right now, when it should be way past its expiration date, it weren't eating the ship alive. It feels as if every other new SSHG post-DH is MLC and it makes me grind my teeth. In the OotP era of course, it's more forgivable (and often, ironically, less clichéd) Besides Blood's I absolutely adore an unfinished MLC humor/romance, "Meeting of the Minds" by Helga--so if it's well done enough--but it has to clear a pretty high hurdle for me.

Hope the writer's block is busted! If not, just sit down and start typing, and eventually it will move. I swear.

Ugh. I dearly hope so. I hate it when I'm in one of those periods I hate everything I write...

Not all of these are keepers--but it was a rich period for epics in the ship :-) Enjoy!
May. 9th, 2008 04:37 am (UTC)
Ooh. A new list! Several of these I haven't even read (and a couple I haven't even come across before, I think).

Oddly enough, looking at this list, I wonder if most of my favourite OOTP era fics are either shorter or incomplete, as there's only about two here which I really, really loved (and a bunch I liked).
May. 9th, 2008 04:54 am (UTC)
The ones I starred I either love, admire, or like--not necessarily the same thing. I don't know I'd ever reread Chaos Is Come Again, for instance--not a happy fic--but reading it I understand better why many including keket_amunet and wonderfulwrites consider it one of the best SSHG ever written.

But yeah, a lot of my favs of this era are still incomplete (Summoning, Pet Project, Meeting of the Minds) or are shorter (works of Bloodcult, Bambu, Melisande, Deeble, The Grey Lady, FriendlyQuark, April Grey, Shiv)

Which are the two that are your favs if you don't mind being put on the spot? It's hard for me to pick one, because there are some that while I admire them, they're not feel good. Even though this was the last time you could more easily see a happy ending for Snape, the era produced some really dark fic.

Somehow, I don't find that upsetting...
May. 9th, 2008 05:47 am (UTC)
Heh--not all of these are winners--and a lot of the outstanding ones are *very* dark. I was surprised--I thought of the HBP era as the one of doom and gloom--but at least among the epics, OotP produced more than its share.
May. 9th, 2008 07:01 am (UTC)
You can put me down as a loather of The Twenty.

WHolly superfluous and uncanon insertion of religion and fetishising of virginity yet again.

Can we please have a new tune other than sexual purity.

And Breeding Lilacs just... ~shakes head~
May. 9th, 2008 07:09 am (UTC)
Yeah, I know a lot don't like it. The Catholic Hermione did throw me a lot--but it's about the only fic that made a character of the Pansy--I liked aspects of it.

And I can get not being a fan of Lilacs too--it's very well-written, but it's another one with a admittedly problematic Hermione.

Thank you, Harmony. Quite a few I haven't read and I am looking forward to at least trying. I've read loads of bad fics, these are at least complete and venerable.
My favorites here are Somewhere I Have Never Travelled (my very first SSHG, read in PDF at Red Hen's), Tyger! Tyger!, and Chaos is Come Again. There are others I read and liked or at least admired. I mostly forgot other others (I remember Hermione singing jazz or the like in The Twenty and nothing else. I hate religion in SSHG, but I don't remember her being a Catholic, strange.)

Thank you very much for yet another priceless list.

these are at least complete and venerable.

Well, they're at least 3 years old--not sure that makes them venerable. Some of them, particularly among the un-starred are not well-written (although a few are, but just for one reason or the other had flaws that I personally felt didn't overcome their virtues--but besides the ones I starred I know Grasping at Normality, For Someone Special, Objects of Desire, You Can't Have One Without the Other, Prophecy's Pawns, The Amber Effect and Luring the Enchantress have fierce fans.

And among the starred, The Twenty, Needfire, Breeding Lilacs, and Tyger! are controversial--not everyone's cuppa.

I find it hard to believe though, that a SSHGer wouldn't find a lot of pleasurable reading on this list.

Thank you, Harmony, for these lists - they are a wonderful resource!

As to your writer's block... I'll try to say this: when I see a new story/chapter by you, I heave a sigh of satisfaction and sit in my best mental armchair, the deep leather one where I feel secure and comfortable, because I know the story will be written with perfect intelligence and taste and nothing will jar me out of my pleasure. You're the most conscientious writer I know, and that's wonderful for your readers.

Thank you--that's a high compliment. And motivating :-) I hope you'll find a lot to enjoy on this list--this was a rich time for the ship.

One fine day you'll publish "An Ultimate Guide to SSGH" and make a fortune. Serves you right ;)

Hope the writer's block is over. There is hunger for BOS, you know!

Heh--heard what is happening to the guy trying to publish a print version of the Lexicon? I'm afraid there's no fortune to be made in fanfic--only pleasure in sharing.

Hope the writer's block is over. There is hunger for BOS, you know!

There's hunger for TPOS you know... *cough*

Such an amazing list, I think this might have been around the time when I began to heavily read SS/HG. Dark Gods in the Blood, Cloak of Courage.. such good stories. *settles in to read them all*

off topic
This week the theme is stories that use a Glamour charm. The quiz will be posted shortly. I expect you will recognize the answer to #2

Here is a pretty banner for your use!

Re: off topic
*bows* Thanks. I'm honored--and yeah, if it's a glamor, I know which one of mine it must be.

:goes to look: And best of all, I'm in the company of KazVL and Bambu!

But....but...you marked Falling Further In as abandoned. WAH!!!! (OK, OK, it may be so... but WAH!!)

Grasping at Normality
Where did it go? I love that story and I am craving to read it again. ugh!

Re: Grasping at Normality
Note that the author deleted and purged her LJ recently--moreover, her story is on neither Ashwinder OR FFN, so it's not a matter of her pulling stories only off one archive. So I fear this means the story is no where to be found, that the author pulled it off the nets. I wish I had better news for you.

I would consider taking 'Sekhmet's Book' off of this list. Book 1, 'Sekhmet's Book' is seperated from Book 2, 'Sekhmet's Rule', yes, but 'Sekhmet's Book' ends in a huge cliffhanger that can only be satisfied by continuing to 'Sekhmet's Rule.' 'Sekhmet's Rule' is unfinished. I experienced some serious rage after realizing I had been reading an unfinished fic for 2 weeks. I know your criteria for 'complete' might be satisfied because the books are separated, but for me it was seriously incomplete and aggravating. Just my two cents :)

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1672155/1/Sekhmets_Rule has a few more chapters than your Ashwinder link does.
