WIKTT: Their Recs of Best HG/SS Part I

Ms Bites
Someone started a thread on the Yahoo group whenikissedtheteahcer (WIKTT) by asking what were the top five to ten best Hermione/Snape fics, and it got some interesting answers. There was a lot on the list I'd never read so I thought I'd make the list handy and why not share?

Some on the list I have read--and loved (and rec'd on WIKTT). A few on the list I'd read (well, tried) and *cough* don't much like. But it occurred to me it's part of the richness of the fandom: That so many people can come up with a top five/ten stories in the ship and so little overlaps. I can't think of a ship that had that kind of depth in my old fandom--and I wonder if any other ship in Harry Potter could say the same. So here be 104 stories rec'd by WIKTTer's (and by some commentators in the LJ thread) below--I'm also going to add some rec's from a forum thread and LJ posts for a more complete reading list--which makes a total of 118 so far.

There is also a classic story, Quillusion's Soul Searching famous for weaving early classic HG/SS stories and WIKTT into her narrative. I thought it only appropriate to include the stories mentioned there below where I can find them, or note they are featured there if already rec'd. That adds 14 more, so make that 132.

Note: A story has been removed from this list because it turned out to have been plagiarized.

The recs under each story (with certain exceptions) are not mine, and not all the stories listed would be on any rec list of mine--most I haven't read. I'm listing the stories in order of shortest to longest for my own convenience so I can knock these off my to-read list according to whether I'm in the mood for short or epic.

Feel free to mention your own favorites and I'll add them below as long as you 1) limit yourself to ten 2) sign in--given the nature of this list - to force you to choose your very top favorites, I don't want to add any anonymous recs to the master list.

novin_ha's rec: I'd also like to say that she wrote more than just Tyger! Tyger!, and in my opinion, her one-shot is a classic to the bone. Post-war, Voldemort victorious... realistic and believable, written from an unusual PoV... and the scene with footprints will take your breath away.

alice_iw's rec

Rhosymedre (Abby), The Fourth Unforgivable 5,173 words, PWP, (NC-17)

snarkywench_64's rec

Vulgarweed, Serpentine

Summary: ". . .I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Professor, but black comedy normally ends in tragedy."
tiddlymillie millie's rec: Warning for the squeamish reader: attempted suicide. Don't let it put you off though... it sounds odd but there is a real sense of humour in this short story.

manic1066's rec: It's an adult Hermione and Severus in a long-term yet totally fucked-up relationship and has loads of bushy hair, hairballs, and a Snape without eyebrows. It is both heart-wrenching and funny and hits every nerve. Wonderful.
Featured in Soul Searching

Leni Jess, "Binding Rituals" 11,172 words, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: Bookbinding sounds dull, doesn't it? But Hermione Granger's life is full of exciting incidents, even if it lacks Severus Snape.

bambu345's rec: the first HG/SS I ever read and sucked me into the ship like no other--lyrical, erudite, hopeful and bittersweet all in one, and I was utterly charmed.
Note: only the second story ever posted in the ship.

Gina (GMTH), Her Seventh Year 14,602 words, PWP (NC-17)
Summary: A series of smutty vignettes showcasing Snape's and Hermione's sexual imaginations. Sex and magic are an unbeatable combination. Pure smut with no redeeming social value whatsoever.
Featured in Quillusion's Soul Searching

ladyofthemasque, "Frogs In Winter 01", 15,157 words, Fluff, Humor, Romance, PWP, (NC-17)
Summary: Draco learns over drinks one night that Severus wants Hermione Granger in his bed, and drunkenly decides to acquire her for his godfather. Add in a mishap with Veritaserum, and more than the usual mayhem ensues!
kathrynthegr8's rec: This one [had] me laughing for hours. (also rec'd by plaidpooka

jezzie, "Slightly Less Sinister", 17,442 words, Drama, Romance, Angst, Non-Con, Violence, (NC-17)
Summary: Snape resists Granger's attempts to enlist his assistance in preparation for the seduction of Lucius Malfoy, out of the belief that she doesn't know what she'd be getting herself into. It turns out that he doesn't know what she'd be getting herself into, either.
kathrynthegr8's rec: very dark fic.

NOVELLAS 9 works

Titania Snape, "Fucking With Snape" 19,032 words, Humor, (R)
Summary: Hermione finally gets tired of Snape pushing her around and decides it's time for revenge...
Amanda Rose adamirose's rec: it's a great humour story. One can never have enough humour in their lives.

Quillusion, The Gift Horse 19,964 words, Drama, Romance (NC-17)
Summary: Stress relief for the Potions Master. An answer to the Seducing Severus Snape Challenge on WIKTT.
bambu345's rec:
Featured in Soul Searching

Quillusion, Last Minute Crisis 20,401 words, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: Severus's past threatens everything for which the Order has worked - but the nature of the threat takes Hermione by surprise.
Laura Olsen brisinggammen's rec: is just sweet, funny and wonderful. So if anyone wonders about Snape's first time...

ladyofthemasque, Matrimony 25,033 words, Humor, Drama, Romance, Alternate Universe (NC-17)
Summary: An orphaned Hermione must marry quickly, or lose her inheritance.
shishkeberry's rec: This is another great one (it's not very long, only 25,033 words) but this is a very cute fluffy story. It involves Snape and Hermione marrying each other before there's any love, but it's not a MLC fic.

Shiv5468, A Snape is For Life, Not Just For Christmas, 31,768 words, Humor, (NC-17)
Summary: Severus and Hermione have been set up by Albus just once too often. They decide to get their own back by faking an engagement, snaffling the presents and then having a messy break up they will refuse to discuss.
tiddlymillie millie's rec: Hilarious.

Corazon, Libidinia Furoris Potionis, 32,022 words, Humor, Romance (NC-17)
Summary: Severus Snape is exposed to a love potion in which Hermione accidently becomes his target. How will the two cope with it?
plaidpooka's rec: Another interesting take on a common plot device. This time, it's a version of "We have to have sex, right now!" Severus has been given a lust potion and must sleep with Hermione or go mad and die. I know, I know, it's been done a million times! But trust me, this is the most honest, sweet, and enchanting fic of this genre that I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

Jezzie, Recognition 33,729 words, Drama, (R)
Summary: Hermione and Snape are drawn to each other against their wills by a mystic phenomenon called Recognition.
manic1066's rec: Still one of the first stories to really deal with a Snape and Hermione and a forced bonding and the mistakes they make along the way. Neither is perfect, but the sex is smoking hot.
alice_iw's rec: doesn't make my 'best' list because I just can't get behind the 'soul bonding'/'fated in the stars'/'cheap plot device here' thing — but she comes closest to getting me to buy it, a feat in itself. *g* I definitely second the rec.

Auror Borealis, Blank Slate 34,596 words, Non-con, Sexual Situations, Hints of slash, (NC-17)
Summary: An attack causes Severus to lose his memory and changes his life.
Featured in Quillusion's Soul Searching

dryade, The Sound of the Sun Rising 39,332 words, Angst, (R)
Summary: A sudden change endangers not only Severus' life. Will Hermione be able to save him and will trust be enough to make it through the night? Sacrifices and Angst and ... eventually ... Hope.
Marleena (angelusc741)

NOVELS 36 works

Doomspark, Invictus 40,910 words, Drama, Angst, Alternate Universe, Character Death, Abuse, Torture, Non-consensual Sex, (PG-13)
Summary: Convicted as a Death Eater, Severus Snape is condemned to have his mind and magic ruthlessly torn from him. As restitution for his crimes, he is sold into slavery - and bought by Hermione Granger.
plaidpooka's rec: Don't let the warnings scare you away, there is not one thing in
this somewhat dark fic that is gratuitous to the plot. Doom is an amazing storyteller and this fic shows him at his best.

Moaning Myrtle, Teacher, Teacher 44,726 words, Humor, General, Romance, Character Death (NC-17)
Summary: My long-ago response to a WIKtT "Turn the tables on Snape" challenge which was issued, written and completed long before HBP. A food-centric romance, being edited, corrected and otherwise polished. This story is complete; I'm correcting as it stands.
plaidpooka's rec: When Severus has to go into hiding, Hermione will have to teach
him how to live like a Muggle. However, Severus will teach Hermione how to heat things up in the kitchen. One of my all-time favorite stories.

Bambu, Calling Card 44,800 words, Adult Content, HBP Disregarded (R)
Summary: Ten years after the final battle, this romance is set in motion when Hermione Granger visits Severus Snape to report the completion of the final assignment given to her by her Potions master.
harmony_bites's rec: The story is winning in it's imaginative use of magic. This is also different from many on my list for featuring a very much adult Hermione long graduated from Hogwarts. (also rec'd by snarkywench_64)

Aprilgrey, Happy Christmas 46,797 words, Adult Content, HBP Spoilers, HG/SS, DM/GW, HP/LL (R)
Summary: Harry worries about Hermione, while she enjoys her Christmas present.
harmony_bites's rec: Both HG and SS are perfectly in character in a story that beautifully works in HBP and that has a winning way with showing them in relation to the other characters--especially in this case Harry and Draco.

Dyce, Survivors 48,163 words, HBP Spoilers, HG/SS (R)
Summary: The war is over, and life - for some - goes on. Hermione goes looking for someone who's trying hard to be forgotten, and finds hope for both of them.
hecate0327 (bluemoonbella)'s rec: It's good. Hermione seeks out a missing and neglected Snape; no one cares for him save a house elf. Snape is pretty close to canon self here, again, not fluffy or light, but a great read. (also rec'd by harmony_bites)

Bambu, Guard... Check... Mate, 48,700 Character Deaths, Violence, HBP Disregarded (NC-17)
Summary: Severus Snape scours the castle for post-curfew violations, there is one unsuspecting student in the dungeons, and Snape swiftly descends to the lower sub-levels to trap his prey. What he discovers makes taking house points immaterial and saving his own life and another's paramount, if highly unlikely
snarkywench_64's rec

PlaidPooka, Naked Journey 48,870, Humor, (RS)
Summary: A potions accident with unusual results. At the end of the journey which will be more bare, Severus' body or his soul?
Amanda Rose adamirose's rec: There's an accident, a naked Severus, a unicorn, and a spying Dumbledore. (also rec'd by jstarz927)

PinkBunny, Logical Love 49,117 words, Angst, Character Death, (PG-13)
Summary: Hermione is a logical girl. So why is she suddenly day dreaming of the illogical? Story includes dream spells, sleep curses, and lots of angsty goodness. Character Death warning for last chapter.
tiddlymillie millie's rec: This is the most infuriating but excellent progression of a student-teacher relationship I've ever read. The sequel's only up to chapter 5 though, and I'm tempted to start trying voodoo on the author to get her to start working on it again.

Shiv5468, Big Name Death Eater 51,013 words, Humor, (R)
Summary: Have you ever wondered what really happened at a Death Eater meeting?
deeble's rec: Shiv ought to be on a best-of list too -- everything she writes is funny, but I especially enjoyed Big Name Death Eater. Take one long-suffering spy, add one newly suffering bushy-haired teacher, mix in a headmaster with apparent misgivings about actually ending Voldemort War II and you end up with a very wry result.

Betz, Who Do You Want? 53,470 words, PWP, (NC-17)
Summary: Answer to the WIKTT Shyness, Celebration & Smut Challenge. Voldemort is dead and the Order is celebrating at 12 Grimmauld. Wallflowers Severus and Hermione end up in the study and smut ensues. Clichés abound, including Virgin!Hermione and sexually inexperienced - yet SexGod!Snape who goes a bit soft. If you're looking for a plot, you've come to the wrong fic, but if lemony sex scenes with some romance is what you want, you've come to the right fic.
Melissa Gately gatelym23's rec: This story is nothing but romantic cliché fluff. But I liked it enough to call it one of my favorites--what can I say--I'm a hopeless romantic.

Fervesco, The Mission Series: "MISSION I: Get Hermione Laid!", "MISSION II: Get Hermione
Laid...Again!"
, Mission III: Get Hermione Laid...Once More!, 54,934 words, Humor, PWP, AU, (NC-17)
Summary: Voldemort is dead and the party is on at Grimmauld Place. Hermione however has set herself a mission.... HG/SS/RL/SB
Amanda Rose adamirose's rec: Well, the titles pretty much say it all. Hermione is off shagging Snape, Lupin, and Black and having a great smutty time of it. She sometimes shags them separately, but mostly together in various sets.

Deeble, Wandless Magic 55,715 words, Mystery/Suspense, Romance, (R)
Summary: Voldemort is dead. Severus Snape is not. But he discovers there's just as much need for espionage now — and he's in no position to do it. (Winner of the "Pride" category in Round I of the Multifaceted Harry Potter Fanfic Awards.)</b>.
plaidpooka's rec: "Voldemort is dead. Severus Snape is not. But he discovers there's
just as much need for espionage now -- and he's in no position to do
it." A wonderful tale of intrigue and romance.

Cinderella, A Marriage of Convenience 58,147 words, WIP, Drama, (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione marries her Potions Professor before her next year at Hogwarts begins in order to avoid Lucius Malfoy and the plans of the idiotic Ministry of Magic. Based on WIKTT's Marriage Law Challenge.
Mollie Snape's rec

Wendy Nat, Time Does Not Heal All Wounds 60,553 words, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione and Severus were in a relationship in the past. Hermione is now married to someone else, and Severus wants her back. What happens when they meet again? Response to WIKTT Morality Challenge.
Melissa Gately gatelym23's rec: Well, you'll just have to read it to find out, but I'll tell you it's really good you won't be able to stop reading.

ladyofthemasque, An Army of Snapes 61,053 words, Humor, Menage en trois, Slash, (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione suffers a chocolate-frog accident, Severus suffers the hiccups, and Snape (& Snape & Snape & Snape & Snape, ad singultium) suffer existential needs... Response to challenge on RS.org, “An Army of Snapes”
Laura Olsen brisinggammen's rec: It is really dificult to feel sorry for this Hermione, who in this fic is the envy of many a WIKTT'er. Lots of smut and a few good laughs as well.

Juliet, Snape's Redemption 63,038 words, HBP Spoilers, Non-Con, HG/SS (NC-17)
Summary: Snape's battle to redeem himself requires the assistance of a bushy haired know it all - willing or not. Contains canon Snape, torture, non-con, drama & romance.
harmony_bites's rec: I cannot begin to tell you how much I ordinarily hate heroine-falls-for-her-rapist fics. But the story is extraordinarily well-written and does such imaginative things with HBP canon--and perhaps can stand for how someone can take a Snape that is arguably even darker than JKR ever wrote him - and yet still make redemption, sympathy, and even love - just barely - credible.

Elaine (Ehann), Lost and Found 65,966 words, Incomplete, Drama, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione returns to Hogwarts with a surprise in tow.
Note This is marked unfinished, but I'm putting it with the completes because I believe it comes to a satisfying end</b>
Featured in Quillusion's Soul Searching

Nagini, Ourobouros 66,438 words, Parody, (R)
Summary: A tale of moral relativism and baked goods.
mayaxiong aphroditeschild's rec: The funniest Snape/Granger story on record, brilliantly written, and it contains some of the wittiest dialogue to ever hit the internet.

TheGreyLady, Mephistopheles 66,980 words, Drama, Angst, Action/Adventure, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: After releasing him from a frightening ritual, Hermione and Snape engage in a clandestine mission to find Dumbledore. However, they soon realize that the situation is much more complicated than either had anticipated. A WIKTT "Hollow Man" Challenge response.
jstarz927's rec: I stumbled upon this fic almost by accident, and I haven't seen it recommended anywhere else since. And that completely boggles my mind, because it is utterly brilliant. Incredibly emotional writing with quite a dark yet utterly attractive Snape.

Rilla, Bitter Hearts 67,011 words, Character Death, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: Severus discovers that a former student carries a heavy burden of bitterness as she returns to Hogwarts.
ingriiid - ingrid_bloss from Germany's rec: Everything else from Rilla is also highly recommendable, but this one is my absolute favorite.

VanityFair, Forget Me Not 68,031 words, Angst, (R)
Summary: Hermione Granger-Snape disappears for a week, and then returns with no memory of the last ten years. Severus vows to find the ones who did this to her, while at the same time trying to convince her that she once loved him. Mystery and romance combine together with past and present to form a story about love and loss.
hecate0327 (bluemoonbella)'s rec: Snape is not nice, but you still feel sad for him. Again...not fluffy or light!
Penelope Evans dracobadfaith's rec: The ending is bitter-sweet, but an it's an over-all great read.

cocoachristy, Reconcilable Differences 76,059 words, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: Six single people are coerced into filling out a form that searches for one's perfect mate. What if the outcome isn't to their liking... at first? This is my take on LOTM's YLC Challenge over at WIKTT.
plaidpooka's rec: A wonderful take on the Yenta Livery Company Challenge. Both amusing and intriguing, CocoaChristy really has a nice touch with this.

Fleab, Subtle 74,381 words, Angst, (R)

alice_iw's rec

Friendlyquark, A Terrible Temptation 78,408 words, Romance, (R)

Marleena (angelusc741)'s and ehlaana justjeanette's rec (also rec'd by bambu345 on her LJ and OWL and by jstarz927).

Deeble, Whate'er Therein Is Promised 81,088 words, Drama, Non-consensual sex (R)
Summary: Seeking knowledge, Hermione signs a contract with Professor Snape — and gets more than she bargained for. (Winner of the "Courage" and "Intelligence" categories in Round II of the Multifaceted Harry Potter Fanfiction Awards.)
insipid_paragon's rec: her work absolutely deserves recognition. I don't think I breathed the whole way through "Whate'er Therein Is Promised." :D

SwissMiss1, Survivors 82,685 words, Angst, Post-HBP, (PG-13)
Summary: Hermione Granger, Professor for the History of Magic, sets out on a quest to prove that Snape isn't the evil Death Eater everyone still thinks he is...and finds more than she bargained for.
ingriiid - ingrid_bloss from Germany rec

Ramos, Unfinished Business 83,702 words, Drama, Humor, Character Death (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione Granger dies unexpectedly, and she's not happy about it. She's also not happy about spending the rest of eternity haunting Snape's Potions classroom!
bambu345's rec: (also rec'd by snarkywench_64)

Abby, The Other Side of Darkness 84,051 words, Graphic Sex, Slash (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione and Snape are sent accidentally to an eerie alternate reality where they both are faced with Snape's less-than-morally admirable past.
Penelope Evans dracobadfaith's rec: I love the development of their relationship in this fic; Hermione begins by genuinely hating Snape and his past deeds, and yet is convincingly in love with him a few chapters later. This amazes me, as I can't write to save my life, ha ha. This is one of the only fics I have bothered to reread, and it comes with an equally awesome sequel! (also rec'd by mayaxiong aphroditeschild)

VenusDeMilo, Lost 86,163 words, Romance, (R)
Summary: Hermione gets lost in the past and falls in love with Severus... Cliché, true... but still fun.
Marleena (angelusc741)
Featured in Soul Searching

Pigwidgeon37, From Hell 88,731 words, Romance, Drama, (PG-13)
Summary: Due to a very cunning scheme excogitated by Lucius Malfoy, Snape gets sacked and has to live in the Muggle world. Hermione goes after him. Why? What does Sirius do in Brazil? And why does Narcissa flirt with him?
novin_ha's rec: her amazing novel is an enjoyable read, even if hopelessly AU now. Let's just say it is very funny, intelligent and beautifully written.

michmak, Heart With No Companion 89,435 words, Drama, Angst, (PG-13)
Summary: "Well, Miss Granger, even incapacitated as you are, you are still causing me trouble."
plaidpooka's rec: Simply one of the most wistfully beautiful stories in fandom. Well written, interesting format. Michmak is a pro.

PlaidPooka, Overcome With Feeling 90,066 words, Romance, (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione has an encounter with a mysterious creature. Has it cursed her?
tiddlymillie millie's rec: Hermione saves a salamander and is gifted to become a 'Firewalker'(Empath). Come on... who else but an empath to figure out the way that Snape really is?

Hayseed, Ordinary People 94,798, (PG-13)
Summary: How do ordinary people cope with their extraordinary circumstances? A SS/HG romance that strives for realism.
ehlaana justjeanette's rec

StormySkize, Renaissance 96,209 words, Romance, Character Death, Suicide, HBP Spoilers, (PG-13)
Summary: Snape is released from Azkaban into the custody of his former student. Snape tries to adjust to life among Muggles, with some help from Fred and George Weasley. Hermione and Snape find themselves drawn to each other.
hecate0327 (bluemoonbella)'s rec: this is a nice story, the relationship progresses slowly, and I enjoy the interaction between Snape and Hermione's friends. This isn't fluffy, but I thought I should end on something that wasn't as dark and angsty as the rest of the stuff I love.

Hayseed, Getting The Hang of Thursdays 96,250 words, Character Death, (R)
Summary: A good day goes bad and then gets far worse than Severus could ever have imagined. Again and again and again. Inspired by the WIKTT Time-Loop Challenge.
Marleena (angelusc741)'s rec (also rec'd by Amanda Rose adamirose, mayaxiong aphroditeschild)

Wendy Nat, Some Scars Never Fade 100,059 words, Mystery, (NC-17)
Summary: Sequel to Time Does Not Heal All Wounds - recommended that you read that first or much of this won't make a lot of sense. Severus and Hermione are swept up in an investigation surrounding a curse, murder, and blackmail - and a scar just might be the central clue.
Melissa Gately gatelym23's rec: Just as good, if not better, than the first.

EPICS 25 works

HyacinthMacaw (Caya), As The Falcon Hath Her Bells: Taking Flight and On the Wing 110,541 words, Romance, (PG-13)
Summary: Potions, sarcastic familiars, spies, lessons, and redemption. Snape's forced to a new direction fighting Voldemort, and Hermione's discovering a Gryffindor's courage. Began as a response to WIKTT's Valentine's Day Challenge.
ehlaana justjeanette's rec

Ramos, Hinge of Fate 111,239 words, Adult Content, Non-con, HBP Disregarded, HG/SS (R)
Summary: Hermione cannot remember, and Severus cannot forget.
hecate0327 (bluemoonbella)'s rec: This is not fluffy or light, but a nicely written story of how people cope when bad things happen to them. (Also rec'd by ehlaana justjeanette).
Featured in Soul Searching

wandlimb, The Amber Effect 113,787 words, Romance, AU after HBP, (NC-17)
Summary: Severus and Hermione struggle to understand the intense longing for one another brought to the surface when they accidentally ingested Hermione's botched potion. Can they trust their feelings or is it just a side effect? Will Hermione ever be able to break through Severus' emotional distrust? Does the Amber Solution (12,155 words) contain properties that might help in defeating the Dark Lord? In answer to the Detention Challenge on WIKTT.
Marleena (angelusc741)

Jocemum, Tea and Sympathy, 116,615 words, HBP Spoilers, (PG)
Summary: Post-HBP. Hermione is helping remove all traces of the Order from the compromised Headquarters when the traitor returns...
snarkywench_64's rec: This is a WIP... I rarely read WIPs, but I got caught up in this one, and it's well worth the wait for each chapter.

Hayseed, Dark Gods of the Blood 125,072 words, Mystery, Violence, Character Death, (R)
Summary: A wandering student comes home, a broken man pays his penance, and a gruesome murder is both more and less than it seems. Some paths to self-discovery have more twists and turns than others.
insipid_paragon's rec: A couple of her other works were listed, but Dark Gods exceeds amazing--an intriguing and unique murder mystery that maintains an excellent handle on the emotional side of our beloved characters.

Abby and Domina, The Fire and the Rose 129,984 words, Adult Content, HG/SS (NC-17)
Summary: A potions accident leads to an unexpected meeting of minds.
harmony_bites's rec: it's the best fic I know for placing you in Hermione and Snape's shoes--and is also one of the funniest HG/SS fics I've ever read--hands down.

Resmiranda, Shadows Trilogy: Like Shadows on the Winter Sky; "Interlude: Dreary Hour"; Door of the Morning 135,392 words, Angst, Romance, (R)
Summary: When Voldemort tires of Severus, he exacts his punishment. Hermione is reluctantly along for the ride in Snape's journey out of the darkness.
manic1066's rec: One of my all time favorites is by an author that is no longer writing HG/SS, but was a mind-blowing work once it was complete. I think this one tends to get overlooked, but undeservedly so. This starts with words in blood on a wall, dives into Arithmancy and magic, creates a partnership between Hermione and Snape and refuses to take the easy ending. (also rec'd by jstarz927)

Snapesforte, Taking Over Me, 142,759 words, Drama, Angst, Romance, (R)
Summary: Story begins in Hermione's 6th year at Hogwarts. Whose side is Severus on? Hermione thinks she knows, but does she really? The mysterious and complicated professor sparks her interest, and she finds herself entangled in his web of deceit, deception and treachery... Nominated in round three of the Multifaceted Awards, for Best Snape Fic and Best Darkfic.
kathrynthegr8's rec: dark fic, very IC Snape.

Kaz, Grasping at Normality 145,283 words, Mystery, Angst, Character Death, (R)
Summary: Seventh Year doesn't begin quite like Hermione thought it would.
Melissa Gately gatelym23's rec: Extremely gripping story; another one that you can't be torn away from easily.

Anna, Roman Holiday 147,182 words, (R)
Summary: Hermione, Snape, Draco... believe us, you have no idea.
Penelope Evans dracobadfaith's rec: The sequels are great too.
Featured in Soul Searching, as are the sequels, Jewel of the Nile and Last Tango in Paris

bloodcult_of_freud, Tyger! Tyger! 153,247 words, Adult Content, Non-con (not in main pairing), HG/SS (R)
Summary: Yet another Marriage Law Challenge fic and an honest attempt at explaining a very enigmatic character.
harmony_bites's rec: One of the few MLC's (Marriage Law Challenge) I can stomach. Hopelessly AU now that it's revealed Snape is a half-blood, but it's still an amazing portrait of the man with such imaginative twists and turns and taking in years. Also features kids of them both who aren't treachly moppets but interesting characters in their own right.

KalinaLea, The Buried Life 163,511 words, Romance, (R)
Summary: Harry disappears just before the start of his seventh year, and Hermione and Snape work together to find him.
mayaxiong aphroditeschild's rec: Bittersweet love story between a still schoolage Granger and Snape with a substory of Harry having a meltdown. No sex, but it's mesmerizing anyway. (also rec'd by jstarz927)

Quillusion, Soul Searching 167,604 words, Adult Content, Violence, (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione sets in motion a chain of events that will take her from the dungeons to the Burrow and beyond, to Stonehenge and to the very stronghold of Voldemort himself, to learn about the strength that wells from the bones of the earth - and from the heart of a man who believes he has little left to give.
harmony_bites' rec: It's a classic in HG/SS, a stand-out in many ways--and very fun for how it works in allusions to early classic HG/SS within its story. (also rec'd by Aldara02)

Regann, Heart over Mind 180,003 words, Romance, AU to Books 5 and 6, (R)
Summary: Something unusual about Hermione causes her to have a very odd reaction to a love potion in Potions class. A spin on the usual "potions gone wrong" theme.
Aldara02's rec

Savageland, Somewhere I Have Never Travelled 180,813 words, Angst, AU, (R)
Summary: More than thirty years after a mass-killing curse devastated Hogwarts, a mature Hermione makes a life-threatening journey back to that time, hoping what she’s learned will save lives. Taking the alias "Gwen Hawking," she finds her mission further complicated by a passionate, conflicted relationship with a much younger man—Severus Snape—and the distrust of her eighteen-year-old self.
Penelope Evans dracobadfaith's rec (also rec'd by ingriiid - ingrid_bloss from Germany and by jstarz927)

Wendynat, Cloak of Courage 190,911 words, Drama, Character Death, Abuse, (NC-17)
Summary: Hermione suffers a terrible loss and has to choose between two paths. Very loosely based on WIKTT Marriage Law Challenge. An exploration of the Dark Arts and their "true" effects, including the Call of the Blood.
Laura Olsen brisinggammen's rec: has to be one of the best fics ever (meiner meinung nach). It starts of as a MLC but develops an amazing plot with some very interesting ideas about dark magic. And it contains my all time favorite sexy Snape line: "Beg!." If by any chance there is still someone out there who has not read it - well, I envy you!

amr, The Lioness Prophecies 266,382, Adult Content, Character Death, HBP Disregarded (R)
Summary: On Valentine's Day of Harry Potter's sixth year, a new prophecy is heard which suggests that Severus Snape's marriage may offer great help in the war against Voldemort. Albus Dumbledore decides to take action to ensure that the prophecy comes about. Loosely based on the WIKTT Surrogacy Challenge.
Aldara02's rec

southern_witch_69, The Succubus 291,110, Romance, Alternate Universe, (NC-17)
Summary: Snape starts having nightly visits from a Succubus. Soon after, an Incubus starts visiting Hermione. They will have to come together to beat their nightly visitors and get past their sensual dreams. This is set in Hermione's seventh year at Hogwarts after her 18th birthday. Nominated in round 4 of the Multifaceted Awards in the Categories, Intelligence and Aphrodisia.
plaidpooka's rec: Wonderful tale. Unique subject, well thought out plot, and
delightfully detailed. Humorous, mysterious, and steamy!

Leyna Rountree, The Twenty 307,163 words, HBP Disregarded, Violence, HG/SS, DM/PP, HP/GW (R)
Summary: Hermione and Pansy form an unusual alliance of girls to save Hogwarts and all of them from a horrible fate. Can they keep their group a secret right under Dumbledore's nose?
harmony_bites's rec: There's not a lot about Snape relatively speaking in this story--this one is more remarkable for its Hermione, and for the relationships she builds with the other Hogwarts female students--especially a remarkably drawn Pansy Parkinson--and for it's imaginative use of magic.

theatresm, Chaos Is Come Again 313,828 words, Graphic Non-consensual Sex, Language, (NC-17)
Summary: Chaos has been cited as a response to the WIKTT Marriage Challenge, but is not: it's more a reaction to many of the rosier and more unrealistic stories that challenge produced.
manic1066's rec: Again, not the typical story. Sure, Hemione is the super-witch; yes, Snape is snarky. But in the midst of all these clichés is a great story with intrigue, action, political commentary and yes... some sex.
ingriiid - ingrid_bloss from Germany's rec: It's a very good read, I highly recommend it.

snarkyroxy, Before the Dawn 325,512 words, WIP, HBP Disregarded, Violence, Language, HG/SS (R)
Summary: Snape is none too happy to find Hermione snooping about in his lab. Arguments ensue, but will the Potions master finally start treating Hermione as a friend, not just a student?
harmony_bites's rec: SnarkyRoxy writes one of the sexist (yet credible) Snapes in the fandom. (also rec'd by jstarz927).

Azazello, But You Alone 356,945 words, Angst, (NC-17)
Summary: Professor Severus Snape could never have imagined the consequences of his helping a former pupil in distress on the eve of her marriage. A story of a passionate and forbidden love that cannot be denied, a dangerous liaison, scandal, and the eternal triangle, starring Snape, Hermione Granger and Harry Potter.
mayaxiong aphroditeschild's rec.

ladyofthemasque, In Annulo 364,830 words, WIP, Humor, Angst, Abuse/Rape, BDSM, Character Death, Menage-a-Trois, Violence, Explicit Sexual Content, HBP Spoilers, (NC-17)
Summary: It began with a letter, and a secret. Was it madness to trust? Was it a secret salvation? Or was it all just lying on a ring, in the end?
Aldara02's rec: yeah, I know, it has been mentioned, but it's gorgeous. (also rec'd by ingriiid - ingrid_bloss from Germany and ehlaana justjeanette).

Azrael, Objects of Desire 453,152 words, Angst, Abuse, Drug Abuse, Torture, Non-consensual Sex, Slash, (NC-17)
Summary: After the war has ended, the Dream Team return to Hogwarts to finish their N.E.W.T.s. They soon learn that there is more to real life than playing the hero, and that relationships come in varying shades of gray.
Laura Olsen brisinggammen's rec: There are tales of great love, tragedies and friendship. And all characters are wonderfully portrayed. Particularly the Harry and Draco stayed with me for some time. And the picture of Snape and Hermione locked in a room with a bottle of Absinthe still makes me smile. (also rec'd by mayaxiong aphroditeschild)

ladyofthemasque, For Someone Special 575,984 words, Drama, Angst, Romance, Hurt/Comfort, Non-consensual, Graphic Sexuality, Violence (NC-17)
Summary: Professor Snape is forced to rescue Hermione from Voldemort and his Death Eaters in an unusual and risky manner, with lasting consequences.
bambu345's rec: I read for three days straight -- hungry kids, there's cereal. Let me read -- and it was terrific.

This list got too long and was truncated--Part II which includes WIPs and Abandoned fics can be found here

Thank for having taken the time to write this list here. I have been reading my disgests, but I think it's difficult to remember everything!

See, I didn't even remember you rec'ed this one "Juliet, Snape's Redemption 63,038 words, HBP Spoilers, Non-Con, HG/SS (NC-17)"
I read it the other day... and if the first chapters were rather good, then the end was really a slapdash job and disapointed, as if the author didn't know what to do and just wrote to ger her story done.

Anyway, I will try to read some of the other fics (though, I have been in the fandom for almost two years and recognized some of what was re'ed here.)

After reading once again the list... I will add I have read almost of the stories here :) Sometimes, I wish I were new to the fandom, so I could read lots of interesting stories.

Thanks for compiling this list. I'm also a member of WIKTT, but I didn't have the time to check all the recs. Everytime I get a free evening I'll come here and pick a fic. :0)

Such is my plan;-) Which is why I bothered to do this.

Though there are some surprising omissions in this list, and others I'm surprised didn't come up more than once. I'm surprised for instance no one choose Textual Sphinx's "Letter From Exile One Merciful Morning" - it pretty much launched the ship, and has been mentioned by more than one shipper as getting them into the fandom. Or McAmy's A Matter of Honour, or LotM's For Someone Special, or anything by Melisande, GreyLady, Ozratbag, Imhilien, Shy Violet, Ehann, Meriadoc... People are still rec'ing fics though, so you may find the list growing on you;-)

Wow, you put a lot of work into this. While I haven’t read all of them, the ones I have are indeed outstanding. I’ll need to think back over my favorites list, but I believe you already have them all here. We need to find a way to put a link it the WIKTT archives to your page.

Wow, you put a lot of work into this.

Thus proving, I have no life. lol.

I did want a reading list like this for for future reference--a LJ makes that rather handy. Though if the list were just for myself, there'd be some fics listed above I'd leave off--but after going thru the trouble of doing a bunch of these I decided I should at least share it on LJ, and I didn't have the heart to make omissions that might be noticed. I'm just not that cruel.

With just a few exceptions though (See, upthread) the WIKTTers did seem to hit just about every HG/SS fic I'd seen mentioned as landmark, even if I've yet to make my way to many of them. It really is a rich ship with a lot of great stories since the first ones started to hit the net in 2001.

May I thrown my own opinion here?

There are a few classics forgotten here - perhaps due to the time passed... But as an old fan, I still recall them ;)

Most important name lacking here is, I think, Pigwidgeon37 - when I joined the fandom, she was The HG/SS Writer. She left the fandom, leaving her great epfic "The Sybil's Oracle" unfinished, but her amazing novel-length "From Hell" is an enjoyable read, even if hopelessly AU now.
http://www.obscurusbooks.org/html/pigwidgeon37/

From Hell - PG-13 - Due to a very cunning scheme excogitated by Lucius Malfoy, Snape gets sacked and has to live in the Muggle world. Hermione goes after him. Why? What does Sirius do in Brazil? And why does Narcissa flirt with him?

Let's just say it is very funny, intelligent and beautifully written.

Her one-shots "Problems With Dentists" - the best PWP ever - and "Thank You Sir" - the most heart-wrenching drama - also deserve a mention ;) And "Danse Macabre", which always has me amazed with the perfection of her style.

Oh! And of course "Die Hard - Hogwarts Experience". CrackFic before crack fic was even popular ;) A film script, written by Lucius Malfoy...

I'd also like to say that bloodcult of freud wrote more than just "Tyger, Tyger", and in my opinion, her one-shot "Long Black Coat"
http://ashwinder.sycophanthex.com/viewuser.php?uid=1592
is a classic to the bone. Post-war, Voldemort victorious... realistic and believable, written from an unusual PoV... and the scene with footprints will take your breath away.

Thanks for the recs and links! I'm happy to have them. I did think there were some curious ommissions on this list (and some curious choices) although I thought the posters on WIKTT had gotten *almost* all of the HG/SS I had constantly heard about as the best in the ship--or at least most of the authors.

Thank you for compiling this list. I've already read most of these stories but there are a few that I haven't that I'm looking forward to.

While I'm here I'd like to rec another story by LOTM (Matrimony). This is another great one (it's not very long, only 25,033 words) but this is a very cute fluffy story. It involves Snape and Hermione marrying each other before there's any love, but it's not a MLC fic.

Thanks for providing this list! I'm always looking for archives of excellent SS/HG fics.

And um, I don't think I saw YOUR fic on the list or did I miss it?

If it's not on the list I recommend your fic "Book of Shadows" It's off to an excellent start. It ties so perfectly to canon I feel as if I'm reading one of the books and yet it is fresh and new.

Mar. 5th, 2006 02:46 pm (UTC)
No, it's not on the list. Though I guess now I have to add it? I'm rather embarrassed to even though you're within the rules I set.

I wouldn't mind that much, but there are sooo many HG/SS favs of mine not on the list above. I limited myself to the ones I rec'd on WIKTT in that thread, because I felt the strength of the list above is how the rec'er is limited to ten, although people did generally try to avoid what had already been mentioned onlist. (It's why I'm not putting anonymous recs on the list--how can you know they haven't already chosen over ten?)

But I'm surprised at some of the stories and authors still omitted. If there's any favorite HG/SS of yours (up to ten--nine if you count BOS) missing from this list--please feel free to mention it and I'll happily add it here.

It would be kinda nice to reach 100 stories;-)

Thanks so much for your review on OWL, especially after all the time between updates, it was much appreciated.

This is an amazing amount of work you've put into this compilation, and it's very much appreciated!

I'm glad someone mentioned Deeble up above in the comments--her work absolutely deserves recognition. I don't think I breathed the whole way through "Whate'er Therein Is Promised." :D

Myself, I'd want to point people to Hayseed's Dark Gods in the Blood. A couple of her other works were listed, but Dark Gods exceeds amazing--an intriguing and unique murder mystery that maintains an excellent handle on the emotional side of our beloved characters.

It was worth doing--I loved being pointed to great HG/SS and I love passing it on. And thank you so much for in a sense seconding the rec for Deeble--this time attributed--so I can add her to the master list, as well as recommending the other story by Hayseed.

Heh. Glad you find it useful--it's getting almost too long now--yet still has some strange omissions--but also has some out of the way stuff I'd never heard mentioned that's been loverly. Enjoy!

What a great list, my friend.

::hugs you::

I'm really honored to be included in this group, and thank you. Some of these stories are absolutely brilliant and on my favorites list, and others seem to be jewels waiting for me to read! I can hardly wait to have the time to indulge.

I cross-referenced your recs from Author Appreciation Week and the Leaky Cauldron to get them under ten and included them here btw--particularly because no one else had rec'd "Letter from Exile" or For Someone Special and I considered that a crime;-) There are favorites of mine not on this list because I limited myself to ten--but there are also many on this list I'd never heard mentioned that are real treats. Just goes to show the richness of this ship.

Note--this list of HG/SS is at over 100--and I still have yet to find one good Ron/Hermione--and I've been trying.

Oh, well.

Good luck in the last lap!

You're welcome--it's a fun list--I haven't liked all I've read here--but there are also other authors I've tried because of this list, like FriendlyQuark, Daya, Dryad, and Pigwidgeon who have become favorites.

Feel welcome to let me know if you think there's a story missing from the list you think should be included.

So Snape/Hermione is not really my thing, bu when I find one I like, I love. Does that make sense? I'll definitely check some of these out.

It makes perfect sense, because I feel the same way about DM/HG. I didn't seek it out particularly, but when I joined OWL, the archive was small enough I thought I'd branch out of my ship, and I found pir8fancier's Room Serviced, and then the one, two, three punch of Bambu, Snarkywench and you did me in.

Not everything here is something I'd rec btw--for one thing some people like their Snape far more nasty or far more fluffy than I do--and the list is almost too long now to act as a good intro for someone into the ship--but there's a lot to love on it.

Fic Recs
Wow, thanks for including my recs (under my nick mayaxiong) for these fics, and there are so many more that missed the list, simply because they weren't SS/HG enough or had alternater storylines...

Great job!!

Re: Fic Recs
There are many, many of my favorite HG/SS authors that are inexplicably not on this list--melisande88, , Ramora, The Grey Lady, Shy Violet--and many more authors I know by reputation I'm surprised haven't been mentioned. In the spirit of the post that caused so many outstanding fic to be rec'd, I felt I had to limit myself to those I rec'd on list, and that no one should get more than 10--so you'd be forced to choose. But I could easily think of 50 more that belong on the list. Thank you so much for your contribution.

Hi, I'm brand new to this ship. I prefer stories where Snape is IC. I've only read one from the list above, and I look forward to lots of reading. If it's ok, I'll add a few more to your list. LOL. You're welcome - remember - this is a list of different people's choices on WIKTT - you may not like all of them - I don't. It helps to note who recs what - if you like a few of theirs, you'll probably like the rest. If you don't...

I did find a lot of new favs to love thru this though - enjoy.

This is a reply to an OOOOOLD post! Thank you for the rec's. I've been in this fandom for over three years (quietly) and have read most of these and, unfortunately, forgotten some of them! I came to this post as I was searching for an old fic and for the life of me could not remember where it was housed.

BTW: as an oldie, my fav fic is still The Fire and The Rose. I've read most everything else, especially the major works, but for sheer guts, audacity, humor, originality and characterization, I still find myself comparing all others to it. If I had to name a number one, that would be it.

Thanks for all the hard work you took in compiling this list; I'll bookmark it for future reference.

Fire and the Rose is still a top, top fav of mine, even after reading a whole lot in the ship for over a year. Falling Further In is still probably my fav, and it was my first. I'm glad you find this useful. These days I'm also one of several SS/HGers on a rec site, Know It Alls, that has over 200 SS/HG recs if you're curious

Hi you wouldn't happen to know where else I can find Corazon's stories. Her site seems to be down.

Besides her site, most of her stories can be found on WIKTT Archives (33 of her stories)
